Efficiently measuring heat produced during tribological testing. Tribometers have traditionally relied upon estimations of heat generated from friction and wear of different surfaces.

The Invention
UNSW engineers have developed a device which allows 'pin-on-disk' tribometers to accurately measure heat to within a few degrees. These machines measure the level of friction and wear as two surfaces rub together. Previously the heat generated by interacting surfaces was estimated by the operator but with the addition of this device, this can now be done, in-situ, to a high level of accuracy and efficiency. The device developed can be incorporated into the design of many commercially produced tribometers, allowing for a relatively low-cost in adopting the technology.

The technology is adaptable to other systems involving friction and wear under dry contact sliding conditions (wheel-rail, overhead contact systems of electric trains, etc)
