Hydrogen BBQ!

Invention Number:
2016_078
A safer BBQ that is 'flameless' - perfect for hot climates like Australia, where fire bans are almost synonymous with the prime barbecuing weather of summer! The H2Q is a hydrogen-powered barbecue that has no explosive gas bottles or electric cords. It's portable and great for indoor or outdoor use, making it more convenient than current electric, gas and charcoal BBQ grills.

Instead of using hydrogen to generate electricity it relies on combustion, using a catalyst that recombines the hydrogen with oxygen to heat the cooking surface. There's absolutely no carbon emission, no greenhouse gas emission and no toxic emission!

This invention may lead to the development of mass market ecofriendly and safer BBQs and portable cooking devices.

Unsafe gas barbecues, LPG cylinders and associated connections can cause fires, injuries and damage to property. In fact, the backyard barbie with flames, can be a common cause of fires during summer – hence them being banned so often during summer.

As the H2Q BBQ is flameless, it’s great for indoor or outdoor use and is more convenient than current electric, gas and charcoal BBQ grills!  Instead of using hydrogen to generate electricity, it relies on combustion, using a catalyst that recombines the hydrogen with oxygen to heat the cooking surface.

There's absolutely no carbon emission, no greenhouse gas emission and no toxic emission!

Technical / Scientific Data

In this device, a three-stage catalyst is used which enables the clean combustion of hydrogen to produce heat for cooking in a BBQ set-up without any flame. The combustion in this device is achieved through a unique design avoiding the premixing of hydrogen and air (a potentially explosive mixture), and thus eliminates the explosion risk.
